Our Learning

Our approach to learning at Coulsdon Church of England Primary School

At Coulsdon Church of England Primary School, we believe that learning should be engaging, purposeful and rooted in curiosity. We follow the National Curriculum and maintain high expectations for achievement and progress for all pupils. Where appropriate, learning is enriched through meaningful links across subjects, helping pupils make connections and deepen understanding.

We are committed to developing lifelong learners by nurturing both knowledge and essential skills. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and take responsibility for their own learning. They are given regular opportunities to express their thinking confidently, both orally and in written form, and to reflect on their learning as it develops.

Our school’s Christian vision and values underpin a culture of respect, responsibility, compassion and aspiration. As recognised in our most recent SIAMS inspection:

“Staff and pupils are treated extremely well in line with the vision. The school goes ‘above and beyond’ with the support they provide, creating a caring community. Pupils care for each other. Older pupils take an active role in supporting and nurturing younger pupils.”

Learning at Coulsdon Church of England Primary School is enriched through a wide range of educational visits and experiences, both locally and further afield. These opportunities help pupils apply classroom learning in real contexts and broaden their understanding of the world. In Year 5, pupils visit the Tower of London, deepening their historical understanding through first-hand experience. In Year 6, pupils take part in a residential visit which develops independence, resilience and teamwork as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Pupils are encouraged to discover and develop their talents through a broad programme of curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. The school choir plays an important role in school life, providing pupils with regular opportunities to perform and develop confidence, teamwork and musical skills. Each year, members of the choir proudly take part in Young Voices, performing alongside thousands of pupils and experiencing the excitement of singing as part of a large-scale choir.

Alongside this, pupils enjoy participating in dance, gymnastics and sport, and benefit from a strong sporting offer. School teams regularly take part in local competitions, with some progressing to county-level events. A wide range of clubs is offered to meet pupils’ interests, including cross country, netball, football, cricket, athletics, art, gardening, dance, computing and the school newspaper. Instrumental music lessons are also available for older pupils through Surrey County Arts.

Through these experiences, Coulsdon Church of England Primary School provides a rich, balanced and inclusive education that supports pupils’ academic success, personal development and wellbeing.
